Our teams of physicians are skilled at treating all aspects of digestive disorders and liver disease utilizing the most sophisticated and technically advanced methods. Our physicians are from some of the finest training programs in the country and are committed to providing our patients with excellent compassionate care. The practice is affiliated with the Endoscopy Center of the South Bay, the first state licensed free standing endoscopy center in California. Our state of the art facility is approved and certified by both Medicare and the State of California as an ambulatory surgery center. Virtually all gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures are performed at the Endoscopy Center of the South Bay including colon cancer surveillance.

  • Jerome Cohen, MD

    Gastroenterologist

    Dr. Cohen is a gastroenterologist who specializes in all aspects of gastroenterology. He is considered a leader in diagnostic and interventional endoscopy and is particularly passionate about pancreatic and biliary diseases. He is also a local expert in diseases of the liver and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Dr. Cohen completed his medical school training at N.Y. Medical College in 1978 and then transitioned to the west coast for internship and residency in internal medicine at LA County/ USC Medical Center from 1978-1981. He then completed a hepatology (liver disease) fellowship at Huntington Memorial Hospital, Pasadena in conjunction with LAC/USC Medical Center in 1982 before his gastroenterology fellowship at Harbor- UCLA Medical Center from 1982 to 1984. After spending an extra year at Harbor- UCLA as a faculty member in the division of gastroenterology from 1984-1985, Dr. Cohen joined the esteemed South Bay Gastroenterology Medical Group in Torrance, California where he has been in private practice ever since. Dr. Cohen is a Diplomate in the American Board of Internal Medicine (1981) and American Board of Gastroenterology (1985). Dr. Cohen has been a member of the American College of Physicians since 1981 and achieved status as a Fellow in the American College of Physicians (FACP) in 1997. He has remained active in teaching at Harbor- UCLA in the division of gastroenterology since joining his private practice in 1985 and is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine. Dr. Cohen has served on many advisory boards and is on several Speakers Bureaus for pharmaceutical companies. In keeping with his passion for pancreaticobiliary endoscopy, Dr. Cohen has been an active participant and faculty of the annual International Symposium on Pancreatic and Biliary Disease since it’s inception in 1992 (currently at Cedars Sinai Medical Center annually). Dr. Cohen is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and is still very active in the Southern California Society of Gastroenterology in which he served on the board of directors for many years culminating in Presidency in 1999. Dr. Cohen has been active in local hospitals and organizations. He was chief of medicine at Little Company of Mary Hospital from 1995-1997. He was a board member for many years of South Bay Independent Physicians (SBIP) and is a current member of the Torrance Hospital Independent Physicians Association (THIPA). Dr. Cohen was instrumental in the development of the Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy Center at Torrance Memorial Medical Center and served as co-director from 1996-2000.

    NP

    Mary Ahmadian has practiced as a registered nurse since 2006. She began her career as a night-shift critical care nurse and has worked as an ICU nurse, staff educator, clinical instructor, case manager, and an advanced practice transitional care nurse. She has experience in various settings including the hospital, clinic, skilled nursing facility, long-term acute care facility, and home visits. EDUCATION AND TRAINING Mary received her Bachelor of Science in Physical Anthropology from the University of California at Los Angles, followed by her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Nursing from Mount St. Mary’s College at Los Angeles. She completed her Post-Masters Adult-Geriatric Nurse Practitioner Certificate at California State University, Long Beach.   • Wendy Ard

    Wendy Ard has been a physician assistant for over 30 years with broad clinical experience in both private practice and academic settings. She started her career in Gastroenterology and then practiced in internal medicine, cardiology, and primary care before returning to G.I medicine. She is a recipient of the AAPA Outstanding P.A. of the Year and the CAPA Outstanding PA of the year as well. EDUCATION AND TRAINING Ms. Ard graduated from the University of Florida College of Medicine Physician Assistant Program and has a Master’s Degree in Public Health from Touro University. Ms. Ard maintains her certification through the National Academy of Physician Assistants. ASSOCIATIONS Ms. Ard is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, the California Academy of Physician Assistants and is a Los Angeles County Disaster Healthcare Volunteer.

  • Susanna Chan

    MD

    Gastrointestinal digestive diseases and liver. EDUCATION AND TRAINING Dr. Chan attended the California Institute of Technology graduating with honors in B.S. in Biology. She then went on to the East Coast to the John’s Hopkins School of Medicine for medical school. She underwent an internal medicine internship and residency at Barnes Hospital which is affiliated with the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. And coming back full circle to Los Angeles, she finished up with a gastroenterology fellowship at UCLA Medical Center in 1994. Since that time she has been in private practice with the South Bay Gastroenterology Medical Group. ASSOCIATIONS Dr. Chan is currently a member of the American Gastroenterologic Association, the Southern California Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the Asian-American Physicians Association. RESEARCH At the California Institute of Technology she had an extensive molecular biology research background. She was also involved in clinical research at John’s Hopkins during medical school. Since private practice she has been involved, along with the rest of her group, with multi-center clinical trials involving irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatitis C and Helicobacter pylori.   • Daniel Cho

    M.D

    Expertise: Dr. Cho is a board-certified gastroenterologist with expertise in the diagnosis and management of a wide spectrum of gastrointestinal disorders. Given Dr. Cho’s experience on faculty at UCLA Health for 11 years, he is familiar with both common and rare gastrointestinal conditions. Education And Training: Dr. Cho attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he received his Bachelor of Science in cell and structural biology with a minor in chemistry in 1997. He received his medical degree from The Chicago Medical School in 2001 and then completed his internship and residency training in internal medicine at UCLA Medical Center in 2004. He continued at UCLA Medical Center with his gastroenterology fellowship training which he completed in 2008. Dr. Cho joined the faculty at UCLA in the Division of Digestive Diseases in 2008 upon completion of his fellowship training. His practice had been based at Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center, where he had been focused on the growth of his thriving clinical practice. He was also actively involved in the clinical training of the gastroenterology fellows, and residents both in internal medicine and general surgery. After 11 years at UCLA, he achieved the rank of Associate Clinical Professor. As both a student and teacher at UCLA for 18 years, Dr. Cho has strived to be an astute clinician and a strong patient advocate. Dr. Cho joined South Bay Gastroenterology Medical Group in 2019. He resides in Manhattan Beach with his wife Julie, and his two young daughters. He enjoys being an active participant of the South Bay community and getting to know his patients on a personal level.   • Tonny Lee

    MD

    Dr. Lee is a board certified gastroenterologist who specializes in all aspects of gastrointestinal and liver disorders. He has a special interest in viral hepatitis and has dedicated his practice toward advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. EDUCATION AND TRAINING After graduating as valedictorian from high school in 1990, Dr. Lee was accepted into the Integrated B.A./M.D. Honors Program in Medical Education at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He continued his medical education at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated with honors in 1997, and then came to California, where he completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at University of Southern California Medical Center. There, he was the recipient of the Best Resident Award in 1999, an honor voted by his peers. Dr. Lee then completed his Gastroenterology fellowship at the UCLA Center for the Health Sciences/Harbor-UCLA Medical Center from 2000 to 2003, with special focus and research on pancreatico-biliary disorders and advanced therapeutic endoscopy. He joined the South Bay Gastroenterology Medical Group in 2003, and has enjoyed private practice tremendously. With a keen interest in patient education and health awareness, Dr. Lee has been a strong proponent of colorectal cancer prevention and viral hepatitis management with frequent lectures to the South Bay community and healthcare providers. He has continued to champion novel treatment modalities for the patients, including new hemorrhoidal treatment techniques as well as being instrumental in establishing the protocol for fecal microbiota transplantation. In recent years, Dr. Lee has become an active member of the medical community with dedicated involvements in multiple committees at his hospitals. Since 2012, he has served multiple terms as the Chief of the Department of Medicine and Secretary/Treasurer of the Medical Staff at Torrance Memorial Medical Center. At Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center, he is currently the Chair of the Gastroenterology Division and Medical Director of the GI Lab.     Dr. Nguyen is a board certified gastroenterologist that specializes in all aspects of gastroenterology disorders. He has a special interest in, and has additional training on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) conditions. EDUCATION AND TRAINING Dr. Nguyen received his medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in 2007. He completed his internship and residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from 2007-2010, and served as Chief Resident from 2010-2011. He then completed his gastroenterology fellowship at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, IL from 2011-2014, and also served as Chief Fellow in his final year. He returned to California to complete an Advanced Fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from 2014-2015 before joining the South Bay Gastroenterology Medical Group.   • Gloria Sze

    Dr. Sze is a board certified gastroenterologist who has expertise in all aspects of gastrointestinal and liver diseases as well as in performing advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures. EDUCATION AND TRAINING Dr. Sze studied Biochemistry at UCLA and graduated from USC school of Medicine. She did her Internal Medicine internship and residency at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, where she also completed her fellowship in Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases. She was a clinical instructor at University of Irvine Medical Center where she also underwent advance fellowship training in Endoscopic Ultrasound. After she finished fellowship training. Dr. Sze became an Assistant Professor in the Gastroenterology faculty staff at Harbor-UCLA for 4 years. In 2001, Dr. Sze joined the South Bay Gastroenterology Medical Group where she still has a full time practice today.   • Tram Tran

    MD, FACG, FAASLD

    Dr Tran is an internationally renowned liver specialist and was the Medical Director of Liver Transplantation at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Professor of Medicine at Geffen UCLA School of Medicine. She has been triple board certified by the ABIM in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Transplant Hepatology. EDUCATION AND TRAINING She now works as Senior Global Medical Director for Gilead Sciences in Medical Affairs focused on research for a cure for hepatitis B, global elimination of hepatitis C, and research on fatty liver disease. She maintains a specialized clinical practice at South Bay Gastroenterology. ASSOCIATIONS Dr. Tran has broad research interests in the areas of viral hepatitis B and C, liver disease in women and pregnancy and liver transplantation. She is a globally recognized speaker and has been an NIH-funded researcher in the field of chronic hepatitis B, and is active in patient and community advocacy on hepatitis B prevention and treatment. She has authored and co-authored numerous abstracts, papers and books on liver disease and published in journals such as Hepatology, New England Journal of Medicine and Liver Transplantation and has served on the editorial board for Hepatology, American Journal of Gastroenterology, and Gastroenterology. Dr. Tran is an active member of numerous professional organizations including the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Gastroenterological Association. She was Vice Chair and Chair of the AASLD Practice Guidelines Committee and was instrumental in developing national clinical standards for the care of liver patients. RESEARCH Dr. Tran earned her undergraduate degree at UCLA and medical degree at New York Medical College and completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at Cedars-Sinai, where she twice received the Leo G. Rigler Award for clinical excellence. She then went on to complete fellowships in gastroenterology and hepatology/liver transplantation at University of California, Los Angeles and Cedars-Sinai. She has been named a US News & World Report Best Doctor, Castle-Connelly Top Doctor, and Los Angeles Magazine Top Doctor for more than 15 years.     A native southern Californian, Dr. Oren Zaidel received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of California at Berkeley. He then returned to southern California and received his medical degree from the Keck School of Medicine at USC. Dr. Zaidel trained in Internal Medicine and completed his residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Zaidel is a board certified gastroenterologist who specializes in all aspects of gastrointestinal and liver disorders. He has a special interest in irritable bowel syndrome and motility and has dedicated his practice toward advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. EDUCATION AND TRAINING He then went on to complete his subspecialty training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the UCLA Fellowship Program in Digestive Disease and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.Dr. Zaidel has published research on intestinal motility, and specifically on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and the bacterial microbiota in the animal and human intestinal tract. Along with a busy general gastroenterology practice encompassing all areas of bowel disease and screening for colon cancer, Dr. Zaidel’s areas of specialized practice include irritable bowel syndrome, stool transplant, and motility disorders. ASSOCIATIONS Dr. Zaidel is the current managing partner of South Bay Gastroenterology and is an active member of the medical staff at both Little Company of Mary Hospital and Torrance Memorial Medical Center. He also currently serves as the Chair of the Credentialing Committee at Torrance Memorial Medical Center and is an active member of the South Bay medical community.Dr. Zaidel loves getting to know his patients, traveling and spending time with his wife and three children.
